The NCC and the federal government own or manage nearly 4,500 hectares of lands of capital importance in Ottawa and Gatineau. The urban lands do not include the Greenbelt  or Gatineau Park. The capital’s urban lands are divided in two parts:

  • Lands in downtown Ottawa and Gatineau (known as the core area lands)
  • Urban lands surrounding the heart of the capital (known as the urban lands)

In this section you can learn more about the urban lands and the Capital Urban Lands Master Plan that is being developed.

Lands of Strategic and Symbolic Importance

The capital urban lands contribute to a dynamic and welcoming capital for Canadians. These lands and the buildings upon them:

  • have natural, cultural, political, symbolic and administrative uses;
  • support recreation, commemoration and celebration; and
  • blend nature and culture.

The following are features of the capital urban lands owned and managed by the NCC and the federal government.

Scenic Parkways and Recreational Pathways
